MISSION SOFTF O U N D A T I O N

ABOUT THE FOUNDATION

Rooted in scholarship.
Open to possibility.

A nonprofit initiative rooted in Kerala and committed to making knowledge more accessible through education, publishing and digital innovation.

Our story

The digital environment offers unprecedented opportunities for learning and public communication. It also creates challenges of misinformation, superficial interpretation and information overload. The founders of Islamonweb recognised early that communities needed platforms where Islamic knowledge could be presented clearly, reliably and with an awareness of changing social realities.

In 2010, a group of Hudawi scholars associated with Darul Huda Islamic University in Kerala, supported by IT professionals and social workers, began working on an online Malayalam knowledge initiative. The founding project committee was led by Panakkad Sayyid Rasheed Ali Shihab Thangal, Faisal Niyaz Hudawi and Abdul Majeed Hudawi. Dr. Moyin Hudawi Malayamma played an instrumental role in developing the website's initial content.

After approximately two years of planning, content development and technical preparation, the first platform, Islamonweb Malayalam, was formally launched on 27 July 2012 by Panakkad Sayyid Hyder Ali Shihab Thangal. This public launch marked the beginning of a growing digital publishing effort grounded in Islamic scholarship and shaped by changing communication technologies.

The work soon expanded beyond the original portal. In 2015, Quranonweb was launched as a dedicated platform for Qur'anic reading and learning. In 2017, Islamonweb introduced seven specialised Malayalam subportals: Seerahonweb, Fatwaonweb, Muslimsonweb, Ramadanonweb, Hajjonweb, Fiqhonweb and Lifeonweb. They organised content around subjects that readers and learners regularly seek to explore in greater depth.

In 2020, the initiative expanded into four additional regional languages—Kannada, Telugu, Bangla and Urdu—and launched the separate digital media project TheSite. Mission Soft Foundation was formally registered as a Trust in Kerala in the same year, giving the growing portfolio an institutional framework for continuity and development.

On 1 January 2021, the English edition of Islamonweb was launched to reach an international readership. The Assamese edition followed in 2023, and the Hindi edition was launched in September 2025 in cooperation with Qurtuba Welfare Foundation in Kishanganj, Bihar.

Today, Islamonweb brings together eight language editions: Malayalam, English, Kannada, Telugu, Bangla, Urdu, Assamese and Hindi. Alongside the main portal, Quranonweb, Fatwaonweb and other initiatives reflect a broader effort to connect inherited knowledge with the possibilities of modern technology.

This journey has depended on scholars, editors, translators, writers, developers, institutional partners, social workers and well-wishers. Their shared contribution continues to shape Mission Soft Foundation's work in digital knowledge, learning and public communication.
